Farming Status and Plans
Farming status:Full time
Description of farming status, plans, and practices:
I presently farm around 3 acres in southern New Jersey on "free leased" land, with one colleague. 2014 was our first year here. The farm is primarily a research and seed production farm, the flagship for our non-profit, the Experimental Farm Network. We use organic methods exclusively, keep bees, and aim to develop a thriving polyculture. Seed sales fund the non-profit, which has as its main goal the development of an open-source plant breeding and research network to facilitate collaboration on an unprecedented scale. We aim to use the network to develop new plants and systems for climate change mitigation. We grow many perennials, in the field, in the woods, and around the edge of the pond. We also collect, preserve, and distribute rare germplasm from around the world, particularly communities threatened by war, climate change, economic out-migration, and corporatized agriculture. My favorite crops are currants, strawberries, chestnuts, mayapple, sorghum, beans, and squash. I am looking for a long-term home for myself and my ongoing research. I seek a farm with a comfortable-enough house, cleared land, a barn and/or other outbuildings, pond, stream, and woods (maple, birch, sycamore, or other tappable trees would be great). Space for a couple draft horses would be ideal.

Experience & education:Farm management, Farm employee, Farm internship/apprenticeship
I studied international relations at Georgetown University. I've worked in politics and organizing for a decade, but transitioned to full-time farming three years ago. I was a lifelong gardener and seed-saver prior to that. Now I am a plant breeder, grafter, botanical explorer, chef, and organic farmer.
