Farming Status and Plans

Farming status:

Part time

Description of farming status, plans, and practices:

Hi there!

We are Glenn and John, a couple in our mid-30s, currently living on San Juan island in Washington State.

For the past two years, we have run our own CSA of diversified vegetables grown without pesticides chemical fertilizers.

Prior to that, we were in a work-trade relationship with a raw milk dairy in which we cared for and milked the cows, bottled milk for sale, raised meat chickens, and sold the vegetables we grew to local restaurants and at the farmers market.

I also have had several years of experience working at a local heirloom tomato and salad greens farm where I did everything from prepping to planting to picking to processing to delivering to selling.

We are currently growing vegetables only for ourselves and some small sales, and are keeping chickens for eggs.

We love San Juan Island, and have become very involved in the farming community here, but our families reside in the the Midwest and the East (my Grandmother, who is 99, lives NYC) and we are exploring options in that part of the country.

We would love the opportunity to rent, manage, lease, or even buy a farm in the Hudson River Valley and see if we can make a go of it growing and selling delicious and healthy vegetables!

Please check out our website, www.thesoilunderground.com for information about our CSA.

Description of marketing method:

We have built a relationship with local restaurants and the co-op through conversation and word of mouth.  When we decided to start a CSA, we built our email list the same way, and later built a website and used social media to attract more customers.

Experience description:

Both John and I have been heavily involved in the farming community on San Juan island.

We have grown large gardens, run our own CSA, and have sold produce to various markets.  We have raised helped slaughter meat chickens, cared for and milked cows, and bottled milk for sale.

I have worked for the top tomato and salad producer in our county, and we have volunteered countless hours on the farms of friends.
