Farming Status and Plans

Description of farming status, plans, and practices:

I grew up on a small farm in Central Massachusetts, and after obtaining my Bachelors Degree in Dairy Science with a minor in Agribusiness I moved to the Ithaca NY area and got a herdsman position on a 5,000 cow dairy farm. On the farm I was in charge of protocol management, herd health, and fresh cow care; while there I was able to learn business dynamics and excellent herd health skills. I attended Cornell in pursuit of graduate studies in Animal Science, and mostly worked with the microbiology and mastitis management. At Cornell I became interested in preventative medicine which sparked my interest in organic farming, so I found a job managing a small organic farm. My partner is also from an agricultural upbringing and studied agribusiness and livestock. He as well is from a conventional farming background and has extensive knowledge of crop production, animal care, pasture management, and equipment operation and mechanics. We are looking to start a diversified organic farm that creates biodiversity with the land and animals. We hope to use our knowledge of dairy cows to intensively manage a herd of hybrid cows on 100% grass. Following the cows we hope to use chickens to graze the pastures so they can benefit from what the cows have left behind; our plan is to be diversified and create sustainable, and humane animal practices.

Description of marketing method:

Direct marketing with a diversified organic 100% grass dairy method. Transparency and agrotourism are of great interest to us.
