Description of the property’s current condition and current use(s):
One of the fields has been used as a hayfield, but other than that, the land has not been farmed in many years. We are hoping to turn it into a wheelchair accessible orchard and goat farm, with a sizeable organic garden. We are looking for a farmer/collaborator passionate about ecology and open to disability to partner with us in this endeavor. We should be able to provide housing in the future (2022) but right now, we can only offer land.
Farm history / past uses of the property:
Recently, one field has been used for hay. It was a horse and cow farm some 40 years ago, and a wheat farm back in the 1800's. That's all I know so far.
Description of tenure options:
By 2022, we would like to provide housing and a long term lease to a biodynamic or organic farmer who would oversee a vegetable garden where adults with disabilities work, and also help with a small herd of goats and a small (1/2 acre) orchard. Currently we are building up the soil and creating the infrastructure. To obtain agricultural status, we would like to lease the land to a farmer who would like to collaborate on our project in the long term, though we are also open to someone who needs a hayfield for a couple of years.
Preferences and restrictions on agricultural activities:
We lean towards biodynamic/organic/permaculture type farming.
Do you require a farmer who qualifies for agricultural assessment?:
Are you willing to have the public on the property as a part of the farm business?:
Any additional information about this property:
Ultimately, the Lonely Worm should serve as an agriculture and arts based community center for people with disabilities. The project is inspired by my son. You can read more about him as well as a 10 year plan here: https://www.elizafactor.net/lonely-worm-farm/
