Property Description

Soil types:

It's a clay-heavy, rocky loam, but most growing takes place in greenhouses and beds with imported composty-soil, or in heavily sheet mulched soil.

Description of the property’s current condition and current use(s):

Prana Farms is small scale, diverse farm utilizing permaculture style ecological design approachs while maintaining a very organized and neat aesthetic.  Small groups of guests often come on weekends, who enjoy seeing the farm, interacting with the animals, and making food with what is being grown.

Having started in 2015, things are still growing and evolving.  A major emphasis right now is managing greenhouse production, increasing dairy production (includes cheese making), and creating systems for marketing surplus goods.  

We are looking for a back-up Farm Manager, who can consistently do morning and evening chores two days/week (around 1.5 hours morning and evening), manage the greenhouses, and be trained on the variety of tasks involved with managing the farm, to be equipped to run things when the current Farm Manager is away.

Fencing description:

Split rail fences with 4' woven wire.  Barbed wire along bottom and top of goat paddock, and along bottom of Alpaca paddock.  Electric wire along top of Alpaca paddock.  Chicken wire for chicken run, and netting over all.

Water access description:

Well water and pond.  Bury hydrants in greenhouses, outside barn (near goats and chickens), in alpaca area, and by orchard area.  

Barns/structures description:

Small old horse barn.  Main room used as office/dairy parlow.  One stall for indoor part of chicken coop and storage.  One small tool storage area.  One stall reserved for animals, primarily as birthing stall for goats.

18' plastic shed outside for lawnmower, tractor, straw bales, wood shavings, etc.

Owner's 3 bedroom main house, 2 bedroom guest house, yurt, two tipis, 2 greenhouses.

Livestock/crops description :

ANIMALS:  

10 La Mancha goats, 3-5 being milked now or in near future.
4 Huayaca alpacas.
Around a dozen egg-laying chickens
300 gallon aquaponics tank in greenhouse with mixed fish.
A cuddly/sedentary barn cat!

GREENHOUSES:  An 18'x30' coldframe hoophouse with raised beds, and a 30'x48' heated insulated greenhouse with in-ground beds, intended for year round activity.  Variety of plants.  Mixture of concentional classics for regular consumption (e.g. kale, lettuce, tomatoes, broccoli, arugula, squash, etc.) and most exotic and medical specialities (e.g. Tulsi, tropical perennial salad greens, hardy passionfruit, medicinal herbs). 

BEES:  3 beehives

ORCHARD:  Small, terraced "orchard".  4 Chinese Chestnuts, 5 Asian Pear, 20' of Blueberries, 20' of Goji Berries.  Permaculture Guild planting around trees.

MUSHROOMS:  Around 1000 plugs each of:  Lion's Mane, Reishi, Turkey Tail, Blue Oyster.  Pluggin in Spring and Fall.

SAP:  Maple and Birch tree tapping, for drinking rather than syrup making.  Possibly targeting 200 gallons/week.

MISC:  Pond with bass and carp, varieties of other plants here and there (e.g. schizandra and hardy kiwi in containers on deck), active compost systems, etc.

Description of tenure options:

There are tiers of tenure.

  • Immediate focus is to have a person to chores and some hourly tasks two days per week.
  • Secondary focus is to have a person trained to manage the farm/property when the current manager may take a break for weeks/months--during that time, possibility over housing on site.
  • Tertiary focus is cultivate relationships with anyone who may want to engage in creative partnership to best utilize the land.
