Farming Status and Plans
Description of farming status, plans, and practices:
We're looking for a new place now (4/2017).
We are interested in native plant nurseys, sprouts, herbs, mushrooms, and farm critters, and intend to grow organically.
We're new to farming, and so far have been working only with greenhouses, and hoophouses. Ultimately looking to buy with the intention of breaking out into the land, but want to lease first.
We would like a place that has good well water, a house around 2-2,500 sq ft and at least one other building structure.
Please get in touch (first by email), if we could work something out!
Description of marketing method:
primarily targeting the natural food consumer - infused oil misters, salad mixes, vinegars, edible flowers, and nursey seedlings. We are interested in focusing on native plants. Long term, we are looking at incorporating a non-profit educational component, be it with Life Sciences or hands-on education.
We would view this year in the new place as the testing phase for the groundwork of business in year 2.
Does this farmer have a business plan?In progress
Preferred location:Columbia, Dutchess, Greene, Orange, Putnam, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Sullivan, Ulster, Washington
Desired acreage:1-5, 6-10, 11-20, 21-50, 51-100, >100
Infrastructure required:Onsite housing, Barns or other facilities for storage of equipment, livestock, and crops, Water access, Electrical Access
Description of buildings required:
Housing (single family) 2,500 sq ft ideal (no electric heat, and hardwood floors only).
More flexible on the secondary building - could be as simple as a pole barn or an old dairy barn, but we would need electricity in it. Water access around the building (either onsite or through a hose) would be appreciated.
We are also looking for a property that is far off the beaten track (a quiet area). The farm we are currently at, is about 30ft off from a busy road.
Description of water access required:
Crops and Livestock
Primary crops:Vegetables, Fruits, Ornamentals, Other Crops
Primary Livestock:Equine, Poultry
Description of livestock/crops:
we would probably stick with what we've been doing so far - sprouts, seedlings, herbs & ornamentals to start.
With this next move, we probably will start exploring poultry, but on a small scale for this year.
Tenure options desired:For Lease, For Sale, Other Tenure Agreement
Description of tenure options desired:
possibly lease to own, after leasing for at least 6 to 12 months.
Will this farmer's operation qualify an eligible landowner for an Agricultural Assessment?Maybe
Experience & education:Farm internship/apprenticeship
Professionally, I have worked for Cornell, in a business capacity for their Life Sciences division.
Personally, I have rented greenhouses and hoophouses.
In South Florida, I have interned at plant nurseys as well as I also organized several non-profit groups around healthy eating starting with teaching inner-city women how to grow food and then how to cook those veggies that they grew.
