Farming Status and Plans
Farming status:Part time
Description of farming status, plans, and practices:
5 years experience with grass based, organic dairy and raising cattle and other livestock, pigs and chickens. Assistant manager for 2 year at grass fed raw-milk dairy in Pennsylvania, milking 40-45 cows and direct selling bottled milk. Interested in land to to create a diverse farm that would center around cows, grass, and dairy for ecological and fertility benefits and to provide the core business plan for the farm. My farming methods are influenced by biodynamics and going beyond organic, and into sustainable, ecological, and grass based farming. I am interested in how this method of farming can also generate fertitily for growing either till or no till arable crops, particularly grain for the local market.
Description of marketing method:
Would be fine working with existing set up at already working dairy. But, I would hope for selling to grass based producers of dairy products, or marketing directly grass fed organic milk. Would also emphasis diversity for lesser products, secondary livestock and vegetables / arable crops through exploring locals markets.
Does this farmer have a business plan?No
Preferred location:Albany, Columbia, Dutchess, Greene, Orange, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Sullivan, Ulster, Washington, Eastern, Southeast
Desired acreage:21-50, 51-100, >100
Crops and Livestock
Primary crops:Vegetables, Grains, Hay
Primary Livestock:Cattle - Beef, Cattle - Dairy
Description of livestock/crops:
Based around dairy and cattle, pastured chickens probably primarily broilers but some layers. Maybe pigs, especially if they can consume a waste product or be utlilzed for land clearing or bedded-pack manure turning. I hope to use basis of dairy business and crop rotation and fertility from animals to grow arable row crops, vegetables and grains.
