Farming Status and Plans
Farming status:Part time
Description of farming status, plans, and practices:
Hello! I have been gardening organically for over 20 years and this year created a business called Garden de Sol where I am growing and selling seasonal herbs, flowers, and vegetables. The land at my home is VERY limited but I am loving what I am doing. My goal is to find a small piece of land to farm and to expand my business to bring locally grown herbs, flowers, and vegetables to the lower Hudson Valley area.
Description of marketing method:
Marketing includes selling at Farmers Markets (I currently am a vendor monthly at John Jay Homestead), pop up events at businesses, selling to local restaurants and chefs, and through social media (you can follow me @gardendesol on instagram)
Does this farmer have a business plan?In progress
Preferred location:Putnam, Westchester, Southeast
Infrastructure required:Water access
Description of water access required:
Water access is needed to be able to irrigate the crops. Fencing would also be wonderful as would electricity and other amenities but they are not as necessary as WATER!
Crops and Livestock
Primary crops:Vegetables, Fruits, Ornamentals, Other Crops
Description of livestock/crops:
Crops include Herbs, Flowers, and Vegetables. I also create containers for indoor and outdoor use of herbs, flowers, and house plants that use repurposed cans from the local food service industry.
Tenure options desired:Farm Management, For Lease, Partnership, For Sale, Other Tenure Agreement
Description of tenure options desired:
I am being open here. I would love to grow/farm fulltime and am open to how this may come about. I know there are landowners out there who, like myself, care about the environment and would love to see their land producing - not only for the people who will benefit from the vegetables but from the habitat that will be better for it!
Will this farmer's operation qualify an eligible landowner for an Agricultural Assessment?Maybe
I do not have a formal education in farming or argriculture - but I have spent my entire adult life gardening organically. I learned from two very knowledgeable people when I worked at Consumer Reports magazine and joined the organic gardening club. We grew on a plot that was large and we sold our produce to the employees. They taught me so much from how to grow potatoes to what flowers to plant to keep away bugs. I have been addidcted to growing ever since and have always grown my garden organically. I have a Masters Degree in Art Therapy and a Bachelors in Business Mangagement. A Creative type that can do accounting! Yes we exist!!! With all kidding aside, as I approach my fiftieth birthday my new motto is 50 and Farming! I would love to take my business to the next level.
