Farming Status and Plans
Description of farming status, plans, and practices:
Our names are Jade Marks and Manuel Poy, we are farmers based in Brooklyn with backgrounds in urban and rural farming. We are seeking a plot of land to begin a small farm (2-5 acres) with diversified vegetable, flower, and medicinal herb production. With combined experience of 20 years of farming, we share a demonstrated commitment to growing truly high quality food for our communities. Our work is rooted in a vision for food/land sovereignty, collective liberation, and shifting our relationship to the land into one that is sustainable and mutually nourishing. We hope to grow for CSA, restaurants, and wholesale. We will exclusively use organic, low to no-till, bio-intensive farming methods with a commitment to building soil fertility and cultivating life on the farm. We would work to further integrate the farmscape with the greater acreage of the land, establish woody perennials, and assess the geology, and maintain a regenerative lens with the farm at the heart.

Manuel is an experienced small scale biointensive organic production farmer and has been involved in sustainable agriculture by work, practice, and study since 2006. For the last 4 years, Manuel managed multiple small acreage high density farm sites in BK. As Regional Farm Manager with ACP/PE, he led the expansion of farm operations - more than doubling production capacity through direct site development and implementing systems designed with holistic planning and intention, building a cohesive network of farms that worked from a center out operations plan. Along with physical spaces, Manuel established digital infrastructure for all farm operations - systems of record keeping, reporting, and analysis. Jade’s background is in small-scale organic farming and farm-based youth development. They started farming in 2010 at a biodynamic vegetable, dairy, and coffee farm in Ecuador, went on to farm at a biodynamic sustenance vegetable and herb farm in Vermont, and have since then been working primarily at urban farms. Jade currently farms at the Brooklyn Grange, the world’s largest rooftop farms in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Prior to that, they were Farm Manager at The Campaign Against Hunger, managing 1.5 acres in Brooklyn and Queens and coordinating a youth-program. Jade also attended herbalism school in the Hudson Valley in 2018 and is a practicing community herbalist.
