Current farming status:

Mikhail Pozin: Experience in

  • Organic and biodynamic-style minimum tillage market garden (CSA)
  • 20 acre semi-mechanized reduced tillage organic vegetable and herb farm (Union Square Greenmarket).
  • Currently apprenticing at Glynwood with 1/2 acre reduced tillage market garden and 5 acres of mechanized reduced tillage of organic vegetables and herbs.
  • Previous agricultural experience includes hydroponics. 

​Endless reader of scholarly articles, books, and educational resources related to health and regenerative/agroecological agriculture (and where the twain meet).

Background in community management, marketing, business development, economic development, wellness, and the arts.

Trish Phelps -

  • Beekeeper (currently has hives on a biodynamic farm in PA) utilizing organic and treatment-free management techniques focused on the bees' health and natural tendencies 
  • Studying natural building
  • Background in photography, chalk art, writing, and music
  • Currently running business operations for an interior building firm in NYC including HR, accounting, compliance, taxes, insurance, and project management (remote position)

Both are graduates of GrowNYC's Farm Beginnings / FarmROOTS business training program, as well as the Center for Bioregional Living's Permaculture Design Course (Brooklyn, NY).

Plans and Practices: Create a farm and destination focused on a holistic approach to health (diet, land stewardship, intergenerational community, arts). Emphasis on financial success and climate resiliency/adaptation via ecological management and diverse enterprises (water management, no tillage, synergistic intercropping, windbreaks, many beneficial organism and pollinator habitats, microclimates, blend of annual and perennial crops). Primarily looking to feature CSA, with additional sales to herbalists. Committed to seeking organic certification and exceeding requirements.

Trish's parents (father is Mr. Fix-It/Create-It handyman and mother is experienced flower grower) are also looking to be involved at least part-time.

Timeline:

- Year 0-3: Establish intensive market garden focusing on nutrient-dense vegetables, culinary/medicinal herbs, and flowers. 1 greenhouse, 1-2 initial high tunnels, and chicken coop for eggs (and compost). Establish apiary.

- Year 1-2: Introduce pastured meat rabbits (meat, fertilizer, low impact land usage)

- Year 1-3: Establish perennial crops, including medicinals, native/climate compatible fruit, and nuts. Windbreaks, microclimates, and strategic use of land to minimize climate impact. Perennials will be established throughout market garden in alley cropping method to provide greater weather resilience and managed use of land.

- Years 4+ dependent on farming arrangement. Open to discussing long-term vision for community events (health, art, family-friendly, intergenerational, bridging urban/rural divide, and similarly themed), a potential herbal teahouse, or related initiatives with interested parties.
